The publication “Anti-infective Guidelines for Community-acquired infections ”  was developed by the Anti-Infective Review Panel which represents a mix of health professionals with expertise in several fields and practise in a variety of clinical settings.  In addition, hundreds of health professionals have provided input and made for a very practical and relevant document.


We have continued to receive hundreds of positive comments from practitioners across Canada and internationally regarding its content and user-friendliness.  We sincerely thank all reviewers for their on-going support.

The introduction of many new anti-infectives and the rise of drug-resistant organisms has made it difficult for family physicians to know the specific place in therapy of each of these anti-infectives in the treatment of infectious diseases. The Anti-infective Review panel has developed general guidelines to assist in the process of selection of anti-infective therapy. The panel believes these guidelines, that have been updated with the latest evidence on anti-infectives and feedback from hundreds of health professionals, can be a complimentary, educational tool to promote the most appropriate use of medications and the best practice of medicine. However, they are not intended to replace a physician's judgement and in addition are not to be used as a tool for cost-containment strategies.
